when the world ends

when the world ends it won’t be that much of a surprise
it’s been prophesied after all
a million different visionaries and doom-speakers
all gathered at the mountain at the edge of world
to tell me money doesn’t matter
(i already knew this)
and to live the last of my days in fear and relevery
(i already knew this too)

raze the ground and new growth will trickle up from the ashes
that’s basic gardening
the world is a crater and it's gonna fill with water
a globe with a hole in it,
a cup in their hands, put it under the tap
it’s actually pretty common practice to reuse old canvases,
paint over what’s already there

i’ll spend the last of my days,
fighting to the end of my days with the rest of them
we didn’t start this fight but we’ll all pick our sides
(always i pick their side)-
everything can change in the blink of an eye,
in the turn of a blade-
we walk that thin metal tightrope
between what’s left and the abyss hanging beneath
keeping company of murders and marauders;
who could have known those conspiring fear mongers would be right after all?

when the world ends it’ll get back up again eventually
roll over out of bed and start the day again,
every day
and the rest of the globe across the mountain’s edge of the world
won’t have the faintest idea the world has ended
it’s kind of our personal business anyway-

for a brief moment we’ll start a fire
it’ll be a star against the abyss of the world now
hospitality means nothing, we’ve forgotten all their favors
turns out the apocalypse cult had another thing coming
and a few secrets to kindle the fire
the world ended, our world ended, their world ends with us
everything we know dies in fire.

when the world ends mine will begin again
roll over in bed, start the day again
there’s always something to do
in my merry band of murders and marauders;
i’ve followed them this far
to our bittersweetest end-
we’ve all gotta have someone watching our backs,
even the folks holding the knives just out of view
and the torches to burn your house in their other hands
right, someone’s gotta take their side
and that someone just so happens to be me.
